How can GFSD help federal agencies and corporations?

Diverse pool of talented science and engineering graduate students who can be a part of your future workforce

Who are your current partners?

Who are we looking to partner with?

  • Corporations and federal agencies that are committed to improving diversity and equity in STEM workplaces
  • Partners who are able to financially support talented graduate students.
  • Partners who are able to provide paid summer internships & mentorships opportunities.

Why do employers participate?

GFSD’s partners recognize the importance of joining together with academia to increase the overall number of U.S.-citizens with STEM doctorates, especially of women and underrepresented minorities. The summer internships allow employer-partners to come to know the future PhD’s whom they may wish to hire someday. Moreover, GFSD costs an employer half or less of what it would cost them to mount their own fellowship.

How does the process work?

Using social media, presentations, this web site, custom communication etc., GFSD publicizes the program and recruits applicants nationwide. Students submit their applications between August and December. Early in the calendar year, GFSD employers review student applications and select the students whom they wish to sponsor as GFSD Fellows. Applicants typically are notified in mid-March. At the start of the fellowship, the employer pays its annual sponsorship directly to GFSD, who then transmits the payment the university.

What is the commitment of a corporation or federal agency?

Companies and agencies which become GFSD members pay no membership fee and have no obligation to support any particular number of fellows in a given year. But once an employer has asked GFSD to make an award offer and a student accepts the offer, the employer is expected to provide an annual expense allowance of $20,000 and to GFSD’s overhead fee of $7,000 for that fellow, for the length of time specified in the fellow’s award letter.  The employer also agrees to provide one or two summers of paid internship plus round-trip travel to the worksite. (This is in addition to the stipend and administration cost.)

May employers sponsor several fellows at a time?

Yes, most do.

Is there a post-graduate employment requirement?

Not automatically, but one may be required at the employer’s discretion. If you are interested in learning more, please contact gfsd@stemfellowships.org to setup a meeting.
